Presented in the urban setting of the Woodlands Workspace, Rooted features a newly commissioned art installation by Allison Smith. Visitors are welcomed into an immersive environment of sight, sounds and scents that encapsulates the delicate ecological balance of the natural environment of a Scottish woodland.
The devastating effects deforestation has on the planet and the need for humanity to reconnect with nature to tackle the manifestations of the climate crisis directly informs and fuels the work. Through a variety of natural materials and techniques the importance of trees to life on earth and the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature amidst the current ecological crisis are examined. It will reflect upon what the future might hold should the exploitation of the earth’s natural resources be halted and what the true long-term effects are of the mass-produced disposable society we now live in.
The exhibition is free to attend and open Tuesday 6th of August from 2-4pm and Wednesday 7th of August from 12-4pm. The Woodlands Workspace has full wheelchair access and accessible toilets. Metered parking is available on the street and St Georges Cross Underground station is less than 5 minutes walk away.
Rooted is accompanied by the panel discussion Ground Work: artists addressing the climate crisis, featuring Allison Smith, Ellie Harrison and Beatrice Searle. Exploring the methods and approaches contemporary visual artists use to raise awareness and change opinions regarding the ecological damage caused by the climate crisis.
