Settle

Settle was a performance ritual led by artist Rosa Farber curated by Anaïs Janze Natera about ecology, reproduction and responsibility.

Soil and water are two key elements that are vital to our ecosystems and life itself. Healthy soil is essential to the survival of our ecosystems; packed with minerals and nutrients, soil is the growth medium for all plants. Soil also provides habitat for many organisms, acts as a filtration system for water and stores carbon, thereby significantly reducing the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

During the performance, partakers will be handed a handful of dry soil. It is up to the audience to decide if they want to mix the soil with water. If mixed, the new substance turns fertile – the life within activated – and will require care. If kept separate, the life of these materials is left dormant and responsibility takes a different form.

In this simple act of decision or indecision, an opportunity is created as both decisions carry their own set of consequences. Partakers were encouraged to delve into what each act might signify for them and consider carefully before deciding.

A song written and performed by Rosa Farber accompanied the performance ritual.
